After it's hefty price increase, the Steam Deck has been a far less appealing purchase, but it has just got a big win on that front as it can now play PS5 games.
Naturally, the Steam Deck is made for PC gaming via Steam, but the handheld console has always allowed for some serious modding, emulation and third-party apps.
And one third-party app, Asobi: Remote Play, is currently testing a new feature that allows PlayStation Plus cloud streaming without the need for a PlayStation console.
Cloud streaming via PS Plus was introduced last year for the PlayStation Portal – Sony's own handheld – allowing players to stream games from Sony's servers instead of their own PS5 console.
What Asobi has done is expand that functionality to non-PlayStation hardware, including the Steam Deck and Steam Machine, and Linux devices more broadly.
The app's basic mode supports up to 1080p gaming at 30FPS in SDR, but premium users get up to 60FPS, HDR, manual bitrate control, low-latency, haptics and even 4K upscaling.
It even comes with the ability to change the app's themes, basically mimicking the PS5 home screen 1:1 on your Steam Deck.
Now for the unfortunate news for those of us who are only learning about this now: the current playtest is invite-only, so you won't get to try it out just yet, but it's not all doom and gloom.
You can sign up for a chance to join the next playtest on the Asobi: Remote Play Steam page, and the next time playtests come around, you can get in on the action.
As for when the full product will become available, Asobi currently lists the software as 'Coming soon' on its Steam page, so it seems safe to say that it won't be available to everyone for a while yet.
That being said, it's still a very exciting development when it comes to Steam Deck, and indeed Linux gaming, and at a time when players were perhaps looking at other handheld consoles, the prospect of replacing an entire PS5 with your Steam Deck does put a rather large tick in its column, even if we have to wait a bit longer to get that option.
