My first impression was I could not believe how pure his voice was,” Wilson concluded. “It was a very pure, easy-to-listen-to voice”
Remarkably, the version of "American Pie" that stole Wilson's heart on the airwaves wasn't even the full song. While the iconic 1971 title track from the LP of the same name rolls on for nearly nine minutes, it was the shorter radio edit that instantly won him over.
Wilson knew a good song when he heard it. The RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) named the track one of the "Songs of the Century," ranking it at No. 5.
