Since its release last month, Christopher Nolan's epic adaptation of Homer's The Odyssey has already reached all sorts of box office milestones – and now the blockbuster has broken another key record.
The film has just become the highest-grossing entry in Nolan's entire filmography, surpassing The Dark Knight Rises, which had held top spot since it's release back in 2012.
So far, it has grossed a total of $1.104 billion worldwide – a figure that still looks likely to increase significantly further – taking it past the $1.085 billion made by the aforementioned superhero film.
In total, it is the third of Nolan's films to pass the $1 billion mark, with The Dark Knight in 2008 also having accomplished that feat.
The success of the film has been one part of a tremendous few weeks for the global box office, with its takings coupled with the release of new MCU instalment Spider-Man: Brand New bringing about the biggest weekend in box office history last weekend.
In addition to the huge box office success, the film has also attracted major critical acclaim, currently sitting on a score of 94 per cent on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes and being positioned as a major contender for next year's awards season.
View Green Video on the source websiteIn our own 5-star review of the film, Radio Times called it a "powerful and profound epic" and that it was Nolan operating at his very highest level.
Reviewer James Mottram wrote: "Filled with blazing action, blood-curdling fights and creatures that truly bring Homer’s epic poem to life, this is Nolan at his finest."
It will be very interesting to see if Nolan can win best picture at the Oscars for his second film in a row, after his previous effort Oppenheimer won several awards at the 2024 ceremony.
The Odyssey is out now in cinemas.
