In early 1971, musician David Bowie returned back to Beckenham, London, to reset after his North American tour and work on his next project. Over the course of the following months, Bowie wrote over three dozen songs, many of which would go on to be included on The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars and Hunky Dory. Bowie demoed "Changes" in 1971, and ended up recording the track for the album Hunky Dory. Lyrically and stylistically, the song explores artistic reinvention and touches on how much experimentation was required of Bowie throughout his career at that point. It also emphasizes, as much of his work did, the importance of letting people be themselves.
Released as a single in early 1972, "Changes" was Bowie's first single released by RCA. The song flopped commercially, failing to break into the Billboard Hot 100 and peaking at number 59 on the charts.
In 1975, following the success of Ziggy Stardust, the song was rereleased as a single on the B-Side of "Space Oddity." At this point, "Changes" peaked at number 38 in the United States.
"Changes" was performed by Bowie frequently during concerts and in live performances. In November of 2006, Bowie performed a short three-song set in New York. The final song he performed was a duet of "Changes" with singer-songwriter Alicia Keys. This would be the last time he would perform live before his death in 2016.
Many interpretations of the song consider it to be Bowie's manifesto of his entire career. Additionally, 1971 was a very pivotal moment for Bowie artistically. It was at this point that he became considered the "chameleon of rock," and songs like "Changes" helped solidify this.
"Changes" has been widely critically acclaimed and appeared on several "best of" lists over the years. Rolling Stone listed the track among their "500 Greatest Songs of All Time," and the song went on to be one of only four of Bowie's to be included on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's list of songs that "shaped" Rock and Roll.
