Today’s victory over the Angels brought the 60-59 Marlins back up over the .500 mark, keeping the Fish on pace in the hunt for an NL wild card slot. Obviously losing Stowers for any amount of time would be a blow to Miami’s chances, especially after the Marlins chose to subtract from the lineup by moving Liam Hicks to the Rays at the trade deadline. While there isn’t any indication that this hamstring problem is nearly as serious, Miami fans will surely remember that it was almost exactly a year ago that Stowers sustained an oblique strain that cost him the remainder of the season — and possibly cost the Marlins a playoff berth, since the Fish finished four games behind the Reds for the last wild card berth.
Griffin Conine or Agustin Ramirez could see more time at first base if Stowers has to hit the IL, or Miami could call Deyvison De Los Santos or Graham Pauley up from Triple-A. The Marlins also just acquired a first base candidate in Jonathon Long (as part of the deadline trade that sent Braxton Garrett to the Cubs), though Long doesn’t have any big league experience.
