Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan affirmed on Friday that the “Mecca Joint Defense Agreement,” signed between Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan, represents a strategic step to enhance security and defense cooperation among the three countries.

Erdogan said “Today, I visited Mecca in response to the gracious invitation of His Royal Highness the Crown Prince of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Prime Minister, Prince Mohammed bin Salman.”
He explained: “During the visit, I met with my dear brother, Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman, and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. On this occasion, we, as the three countries, signed a joint defense agreement.”
The Turkish President continued: “This agreement is based on the principle of collective deterrence and aims to strengthen security and defense cooperation, develop joint projects in the defense industries, and contribute to the fight against terrorism.”
According to Erdoğan, the agreement affirms the right of legitimate self-defense stipulated in Article 51 of the UN Charter and not directed against any specific country and remains open to the accession of all friendly nations that share the goal of promoting security, prosperity, and stability in the region.
He noted that Turkey, based on desire for regional responsibility, will continue its principled stance advocating for the resolution of conflicts and crises through dialogue and diplomacy, and on the basis of respect for international law.
The Turkish President concluded his statement by saying, “I pray to Allah that this visit, the consultations we held, and the agreement we signed will bring goodness and blessings to our entire region.”
