A dramatic conclusion to today's (9 August) Coronation Street has seen Gary Windass (Mikey North) head to the police station.

For months he's protected Sarah Platt (Tina O'Brien), leading to wife Maria Connor (Samia Longchambon) believing that they were having an affair.

The truth was far more grisly. Gary was the first person she'd contacted after clobbering Theo Silverton (James Cartwright) over the head with some scaffolding, which resulted in him falling to his death.

Sarah finally arrested and then charged with murder. Gary has been left guilt-ridden, knowing that he disposed of the weapon. Her boyfriend Kit Green (Jacob Roberts), meanwhile, has made it his mission to try and find evidence which could lessen her sentence.

Earlier this week, Kit discovered from Gary's phone records that he visited a wasteland by the canal the day after Theo's murder. He warned Gary that the time had come to either hand himself in or he'd instruct his team at the Weatherfield cop shop to search the land.

In today's episode, Maria confronted Kit in the street, accusing him of being prepared to sacrifice Gary simply to protect Sarah.

Bethany Platt (Lucy Fallon) was equally appalled by the situation, but Maria was in no mood to be placated.

At Norcross Prison, Sarah found herself the target of a hostile-looking inmate, whose threatening stare left her deeply unsettled. Bethany had come to visit, and was horrified by the extent of the bruising on her mum's face - although Sarah insisted on making light of what had happened.

When Sarah asked after Kit, Bethany finally broke down and revealed his plan to blackmail Gary into handing himself over. Bethany then revealed that she intends to stop Kit before it was too late.

Meanwhile, Gary called Adam Barlow (Sam Robertson) to Victoria Court and came clean about his involvement in Theo’s death, explaining how he had subsequently gone to Sarah’s aid and, as a result, had become the target of Kit’s blackmail.

Adam pointed out that Gary was left with two choices: surrender himself to the authorities, or take the chance that Kit had been bluffing.

Sarah then contacted Kit from the inside. Speaking in coded terms, she pleaded with him to abandon his scheme. After some reluctance, he finally agreed.

However, Lisa Connor-Swain (Vicky Myers) witnessed the conversation and was left suspicious about what had really been discussed.

Kit attempted to contact Gary to tell him that he was no longer under threat, but the call went unanswered and diverted straight to voicemail.

Later, at the station and with Adam by his side, Gary told Lisa that he was finally ready to come clean and reveal the truth.
