Verizon engineers were deployed to fix issues with the wireless service after more than 10,000 customers reported experiencing problems on Saturday in Chicago and across the U.S.
The first reports of issues with the wireless provider popped up around 2:30 p.m., according to outage tracking website Downdetector. The reports peaked an hour later, with more than 13,300 people complaining primarily of issues making or receiving phone calls.
A map of reports shows Verizon customers in Chicago, Los Angeles, DC, Boston and several other cities across the country were experiencing problems.
In a statement sent to NBC Chicago around 4 p.m., a spokesperson for Verizon said the company is “aware of an issue impacting voice services for wireless customers in some parts of the U.S. Our engineers are engaged and we are working quickly to identify and resolve the issue. Please visit our Check Network Status page for updates on service in your area. We know how much people rely on Verizon and apologize for any inconvenience. We appreciate your patience.”
Then, in an update around 5:30 p.m., the Verizon spokesperson said their engineers were “making progress on an issue impacting voice services for some wireless customers.”
“If your service is still impacted, we recommend restarting your device. We know how much people rely on Verizon and apologize for any inconvenience some of our customers experienced today. Our team is continuing to work non-stop until this issue is fully resolved,” the spokesperson said, again directing users to their website to check the status of their service.
