A Chicago woman was charged after a Cook County Sheriff’s Police investigation connecting her to a retail theft crew that allegedly stole more than $100,000 in merchandise from Lululemon and other retailers.
Roise Spencer, 42, was charged with theft of more than $10,000 and processed on a warrant for drug possession and theft. A judge ordered her to be released from custody on Wednesday following a court appearance. However, as of Saturday, she remained in the Cook County Jail custody for her other case.
Spencer was arrested after Sheriff’s Police Organized Retail Crime investigators saw a fraudulent return that occurred at the Lululemon store along North Rush Street. Police said she allegedly returned merchandise for store credit before leaving in a black Jeep. Investigators stopped the vehicle nearby and took Spencer into custody after learning she had an active warrant.
Investigators learned Spencer rents a storage unit that became part of an Organized Retail Crime Unit investigation. Through the probe, authorities identified a crew that gave unhoused individuals money, narcotics or clothes in exchange for stealing items from Lululemon and other retailers. The crew, which operated throughout northeastern Illinois, would then return the stolen items for store credit.
Spencer’s unit was among several targeted by investigators who executed search warrants in April. In total, authorities recovered tens of thousands of dollars in stolen merchandise from those units.
No additional arrests have been made.
The investigation into others involved in the retail theft operation remains ongoing, police said.
