Willie Hall was a member of The Blues Brothers band who played the drums. He started pursuing music when he was still in high school, then went on to back major recording artists. In the late ‘70s, he joined The Blues Brothers and appeared in the films The Blues Brothers and Blues Brothers 2000. He also played himself in the film Soul Men. Today, he turns 76.

In an interview with the Memphis Flyer, Hall spoke about the summer when he was offered to join the iconic band, while he was driving a popsicle truck. “After I got off work one night, I picked up my kids and, with what little money I had, I took them to McDonald’s,” he explained. “Paul Compton, who worked as an engineer for Shoe Productions, lived around the corner, and I decided to stop by. He said, ‘Hollywood’s looking for you.'”
Originally, Hall didn’t love watching The Blues Brothers perform on Saturday Night Live. “I thought it was a farce,” he said. "Even though they were playing Stax songs, I’d turn the TV off because I thought they were mimicking us in a bad way. Little did I know. During the nine months of filming the first movie, I got a chance to hang out with John [Belushi] and Danny [Ackroyd] in their camper. They had a Rock-Ola jukebox with every soul and R&B record I’d ever heard in my life. That’s when I knew they were serious about music.”

Once he joined the band, he got along well with all the other members. When speaking about the films they made, he said, “I didn’t have to pretend. We just had fun. When John was sober, he was one of the greatest people to be around. Everything he did was funny. And because I knew Duck [Dunn] and Steve [Cropper] personally, John and Dan took me in and made me feel welcome.”
In addition to performing with The Blues Brothers, Hall also toured and recorded with famous artists like Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, KC and the Sunshine Band, Bonnie Raitt, and Earl Scruggs.
