ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A homeowner’s overgrown weeds are turning a Rochester neighborhood into a jungle.
One neighbor called News10NBC after years of asking the homeowner and the city to take care of the weeds. News10NBC’s Erin Mahon toured several neighbors’ backyards on Friday.
Lynn Derleth and her husband have lived at their home for 40 years. About 13 years ago, their next-door neighbor moved in.
Over the years, Derleth said tackling the foliage has caused a lot of issues for her and her husband. Derleth showed Erin multiple areas where the weeds grow over the fence onto her property.
“You have to worry about ticks and everything else and the mice disease that goes around now. And it’s just, it’s a health issue, you know and after all of that I can’t, I can’t get out here and work in this heat and we’d have to cover up completely now because of the rashes we’re getting,” Derleth said.
The tree branches are completely embedded with power lines. While the lights are on, there’s no one home.
Derleth said the homeowner visits infrequently. When asked what conversations look like between them, Derleth described the lack of response.
“There isn’t one. You just ask him if he’s going to do it and he looks at you and walks in the house,” Derleth said.
Derleth said she’s contacted the city for years. There is an open code violation for the property listed as of July 21 for “high grass and weeds taller than 10 inches.”
Erin tried calling and texting the homeowner but didn’t get a response. The city said the best course of action is for neighbors to file complaints via the 311 Live portal.
But if the property is privately owned, the city can’t come onto property without the owner’s permission, leaving Derleth and the other neighbors in the area stuck.
“I don’t wanna go to court over this. This is a health issue,” Derleth said.
“I can’t keep going through this. We shouldn’t have to. It’s just – no, it’s too much, and I’m not. I don’t want anybody to get in trouble. But we’ve dealt with it too long,” Derleth said.
