Schindler retrofits hospital for robots
Lift manufacturer Schindler has retrofitted a Swiss hospital to make it easier for robots to move laundry, food, medical equipment and waste around it.

The 30 automated guided vehicles (AGVs) at HOCH Health Ostschweiz in St. Gallen run on software that works with Schindler’s transit management system, which coordinates lifts and the robots.

The recently completed Haus 07A building contains a large operating and interventional floor alongside 96 modern patient rooms. The AGVs were added as a new requirement during construction, one the whole hospital is now adopting.

50 AGVs will be deployed by the completion of renovations in 2027.

Daniel Baumgartner, HOCH Health Ostschweiz’s project manager, said: “It was clear to us that the vehicles needed to move not just horizontally, but also vertically – meaning via elevators.”

“The level of automation in hospitals will continue to increase.”

Schindler has previously carried out AGV integration in retail and hospitality projects.
