A funeral home on Chicago’s far southeast side is being investigated after dozens of bodies were found to be improperly stored on the property, with the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office working to identify the remains.
About 2 p.m. Thursday, Chicago Police Department officers assigned to the fourth district responded to the South Chicago Chapel funeral home, at 2939 E. 95th St. in the South Deering neighborhood, to help the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation with a license investigation.
When officers arrived, they discovered human remains on the property, police said. The Chicago Fire Department also responded to the scene and declared a hazmat incident.
Early Friday morning, roads near the funeral home were blocked off with police tape, with CPD and the Cook County Medical Examiners office still on scene.
In a news release Thursday, the MEO said more than 50 bodies were found on the property “in various states of decomposition.” As of Friday morning, MEO investigators and forensic pathologists were still assessing the conditions of the remains and searching for documentation and birth certificates.
“This process could take several days to ensure proper disposition,” the release said. “The MEO will work with authorities to identify these decedents as quickly as possible and notify their families.”
A woman at the scene Thursday told NBC Chicago she came to the funeral home looking for her husband’s body, which was supposed to arrive at a viewing earlier in the day. The funeral was scheduled for Friday, but the home is not responded to their questions.
Neighbors and residents in the area also reported a foul smell coming from the business.
“One thing we have been hearing from people who live in the area and are visiting relatives, there’s been an odd odor,” NBC 5 reporter Lisa Chavarria said Friday morning. “We can attest, there’s been a strange smell.”
About 5:15 a.m., MEO personnel could be seen bringing stretchers in and out of the funeral home.
In 2025, a Chicago Heights crematory was shut down after the Illinois Comptroller’s Office investigated allegations of improper storage of around 100 bodies at the facility.
