Stuart Fails to Save the Universe takes the world of The Big Bang Theory and engages the warp drive – turning side characters into main players, with weird-and-wild alternate universes where literally anything is possible.
Far from the sitcom set and live studio audience, Stuart Fails to Save the Universe is almost cinematic in scope – with the episodes so far seeing Stuart (Kevin Sussman), Denise (Lauren Lapkus), Kripke (John Ross Bowie) and Bert (Brian Posehn) battle off giant moths and face the apocalypse as they journey to a world run by an AI Overlord.
They’ve also run into much-altered versions of previous lead stars, including Kaley Cuoco and Kunal Nayyar, who returned to their characters after seven years to reprise their roles of Penny and Raj.
It’s undoubtedly a risky move by creators Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady – and one that that has divided viewers, with some hailing it as a genius move, and others a failed experiment.
But cast members Bowie and Posehn were prepared for that external noise.
“You know, we talked about this while we were shooting,” Bowie explained. “We kind of gamed out how it would be received, and we were aware that there were some people who look at The Big Bang Theory as their comfort show, and they have it on before they go to sleep.
“We thought, ‘well, we might lose some of those people’, but I think the people who were really into the genres that the characters on Big Bang were into – the sort of people who also watched Game of Thrones, who also watched Doctor Who – we would have them, and they would enjoy the sudden shift.”
Reviews were also split. Coming in at 75 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes, comments range from “more slapdash than inventive” by Hollywood Reporter to “a hysterical must-watch” by CBR.
“I really cannot think of a precedent for a show like this,” he continued. “I can't think of taking a relatively grounded multi-cam sitcom and going, not hard sci-fi, but intense sci-fi with it. Nothing comes to mind.
“I mean, since we are talking to Radio Times, to put it in British terms, it would be like if the ladies from Are You Being Served? are suddenly in the TARDIS,” he explains.
"I mean, it's a smaller community, I have no doubt that a couple of those actors showed up on Doctor Who, but you know, you see my larger point!”
The ambitious concept didn't come together overnight. Sussman previously revealed to Radio Times that the spin-off series was three years in the making – and he had to keep it secret for at least two before it was confirmed.
But he was eventually able to confide in long-time friend and co-star Brian Posehn (who plays Bert Kibbler), who was the second person to join the show.
Explaining how he was sold on the project, Posehn said: “Well, I was already in, no matter what the pitch was! You know, as soon as they said there was a spin-off, I'm like, ‘okay’. He [Chuck Lorre] didn't really have to explain it at all, but he said that it was a multiverse show.
“But still, just hearing that, you can't really get your head around what the scope was that they had in mind, and really, until we saw scripts, did we have any idea of what we were actually in for."
Bowie recalled the first words he read.
"The scene heading is 'exterior: post apocalyptic hellscape'. I was just like, ‘okay, let's work on this ride together, I guess!’ Let's go all in," he said.
“When just a stage direction, or not even a stage direction, just a slug line, makes you laugh that hard, you're in for a good ride."
Next up: the gang head to a universe where public opinion on science and magic is reversed. Considering Bert is a geologist and Kripke a physicist, it doesn’t bode too well for them...
