The Nolan Wells mystery has captivated America for weeks, ever since the Mississippi teenager was found dead in July, but a new wrinkle has emerged in the case.
Ever since his death, family members and civil rights leaders have questioned the circumstances around the death, but now a new story has emerged after multiple individuals were charged with making death threats against those investigating the case.
No one has been charged in Nolan Wells actual death, and the cause remains unknown, but this week three people have been charged with making death threats against some connected to the case, ranging from a judge to law enforcement and witnesses.
The NBC 5 Investigates team has learned a man from west suburban Berwyn is among those in custody and facing charges for the alleged threats.
The case of Wells’ death has made national news, with a shroud of mystery encircling the death of the college student and football player.
An independent autopsy into his death, conducted after his body was found following Fourth of July festivities on Horn Island, Mississippi, was inconclusive, and there are calls for a more intense investigation.
A new area of focus has now opened in Berwyn, a near west Chicago suburb after federal agents say a man living there made numerous death threats to people connected to the Wells case.
According to a federal court affidavit obtained by the NBC Chicago investigative team, Edward James Porter on July 31 called several witnesses named in the Wells matter, and threatened to kill them, anyone in their home and any cops.
Porter is also accused by federal prosecutors of threatening to kill one witness, cut up the body and stuff the remains into a suitcase.
Federal agents in Mississippi say they quickly traced the cell phone and internet link behind the threats to Porter in the west Chicago suburbs, and he was arrested.
Porter is the third person to face federal charges tied to death threats against individuals tied to the Nolan Wells investigation. It is not believed the individuals are connected to one another, with other suspects in Ohio and California.
The threat charges come as prominent civil rights leaders and attorneys demand a more thorough look at how the teenager died on a holiday boat trip and whether it was a racially motivated murder.
