Major League Baseball announced that Mariners left-hander Gabe Speier has been issued a three-game suspension and an undisclosed fine for intentionally throwing at Tigers second baseman Gleyber Torres last night. Seattle manager Dan Wilson receives a one-game suspension. Speier is appealing, so the suspension is held in abeyance until that process plays out. Managers don’t have appellate rights, so Wilson will serve his suspension today.
The Speier/Torres incident was the culmination of bubbling tensions earlier in the game, as laid out by Jason Beck of MLB.com. Bryan Woo started for the Mariners and hit three batters during his time on the mound. In the bottom of the seventh, Seattle Cal Raleigh was hit by a pitch from Tigers left-hander Enmanuel De Jesus. In the top of the eighth, Speier hit Torres. The benches and bullpen cleared, although nothing especially noteworthy came of that. The umpires ejected Speier and Wilson.
When a player is ejected for an on-field incident, the team can’t replace him on the roster. The Mariners will have to play a man short at some point. What often happens in these situations is the team and player will wait until a time when the pitcher was going to be unavailable anyway due to heavy usage in previous games. Then they will drop the appeal in exchange for a reduced suspension. At some point in the near future, after Speier has pitched a lot and needs a breather, he will likely drop his appeal and agree to serve a two-game suspension.
