Portillo’s has announced major cuts at the company’s Illinois headquarters.
The chain cut 18% of its Oak Brook corporate and “field management” staff on July 31 in what it described as a “strategic reset.”
The company cited lower sales across its restaurants.
The layoffs impacted the 140 employees at the company’s corporate offices but did not affect any of the roughly 8,000 workers at its restaurants across the country.
The chain, which started in Villa Park, slowed down its national expansion earlier this year because of weaker sales.
“While never an easy decision, it is imperative that we examine areas of the business where we can operate more efficiently and ensure our resources and future investments are directed at the right priorities. These actions, along with other efficiencies, will support our long-term growth strategy,” CEO Brett Patterson said in a statement.
The chain most recently opened eight new restaurants in 2025 and seven during the first two quarters of 2026.
Two locations are in the works in Chicago, with a first-of-its-kind walk-up window set to open near Wrigley Field and another expected to open soon on Michigan Avenue in downtown Chicago.
