The ancestral home of former Bangladesh cricket captain and former Awami League MP Shakib Al Hasan came under attack on Wednesday night, after the cricketer's appearance in a virtual press conference held by former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
It is widely reported that soon after Shakib's appearance in the virtual press conference with Sheikh Hasina, his house came under attack. According to media reports, the attack took place around 8.45 pm local time at Shakib Al Hasan's ancestral residence, which is in Magura.
The house was also vandalized. On their social media account, the Awami League claimed that Shakib Al Hasan's house was attacked with a petrol bomb. The party also shared a video in support of their claim. The Bangladesh Awami League also mentioned that it was a calculated attack.
"A grisly petrol bomb attack took place at the residence of Bangladesh’s celebrated cricket icon Sakib Al Hasan, hours after the world-famous star cricketer appeared at a press conference with honourable party president Sheikh Hasina. Ahead of the press conference, BNP, Islamist Jamaat and NCP all publicly threatened national media outlets to weaponise the judiciary to sue in case of reports of the press conferences," Bangladesh Awami League mentioned in their social media post.

However, the cricketer, former Bangladesh National Cricket Team captain Shakib Al Hasan, was safe as he was not in Bangladesh. For the ongoing Lanka Premier League (LPL), the spin-bowling all-rounder is currently in Sri Lanka to play the T20 league for the Jaffna Kings.
He has been living outside Bangladesh for a long time now. It was earlier reported that Shakib is living in the United Kingdom with his family. On multiple occasions, the cricketer himself said that he wants to return to his motherland, but it is not possible for him under the ongoing political c circumstances.
Sheikh Hasina wishes to return to Bangladesh
However, former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina also wished to make a return under any challenging situations. Through the online video conference, the 78-year-old said, "My return is not about power; it's about putting Bangladesh back on track of development, secularism and prosperity. I know they may put me in jail or kill me. I will go back home to be with my people. I have decided to go, and I will go to Bangladesh."
Hasina has been living in India since the collapse of her government in 2024. After the fall of her government, she left Bangladesh and arrived in India. Last November, a special tribunal in Dhaka sentenced her to death for allegedly being linked to "crimes against humanity".
“Fear has entered homes, workplaces and educational campuses; this is not the Bangladesh we built. I call upon the international community to stand with the people of Bangladesh in their struggle for democracy and justice,” Sheikh Hasina added.
