Golisano Children’s Hospital launches mobile health clinic to bring care to underserved Rochester neighborhoods

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Golisano Children’s Hospital has rolled out a new mobile health clinic designed to bring care directly to Rochester kids who may need it. The new mobile clinic will hit the streets in the coming weeks and is being staffed with nurses, nurse practitioners, and a social worker.

Many families in the City of Rochester struggle to find a doctor, to afford a visit or to be able to actually get to that visit.

“Our families want the help, they really want the help but often times they can’t navigate the systems that are put in front of them and if they know, I can walk out of my door and get the services, they’re 10 times as likely to do that then try to call a doctor’s office, make an appointment and then try to get there,” says Shirley Green, the Commissioner of Recreation and Human Services for the City of Rochester.

The Golisano Children’s Hospital stands tall in the Rochester community, but leaders decided they had to go beyond the walls. The hope is that this new mobile unit will do just that.

“When you’re on wheels, you can go anywhere so, we’re really hoping to be serving the need closer to home and where patients and their families are,” says Wendy Hou, the Director of Operations for the mobile unit.

“Whether they don’t have primary care or they had it and they’ve lapsed for one reason or another, so we really hope to be the bridge to get them back into care, provide them what they need,” explains Dr. Katie Baker, the medical director of the unit.

The mobile unit will visit R-Centers, the Central Library and homeless shelters four days a week. “We’ve really looked for people who are dedicated to this mission of course in their health care roles but who are really interested in serving the kids and the caregivers in this community,” Hou says.

And it’s hitting the streets at just the right time. “School is getting ready to start, kindergartners need physicals, they need vaccinations, they need all of those things, why not get them in your neighborhood,” Green adds.

The hope is the people who work in the mobile medical clinic can offer medical attention in the moment and then connect families to more long-term solutions.

Golisano Children’s raised funds to build and equip the mobile unit, the biggest donor was Le-Chase Construction. Rochester artist Shawn Dunwoody designed the artwork on it.
