With the lacklustre response to recent fare such as The Mandalorian and Grogu, it's easy to feel like Star Wars might have lost its vision. That couldn't be further from the truth though if The Ninth Jedi, an anime spinoff from Star Wars: Visions, is anything to go by.
Continuing the story of Lah Kara, this eight episode series follows the up-and-coming Jedi on her quest to find her father and defeat a madman named Nawaam before he conquers the entire galaxy.
Seven episodes in, Kara is finally reunited with Lah Zima, but there's no time to rejoice. Nawaam has got his hands on a giant kyber crystal that he's transformed into an even bigger cannon that will tear a hole in the galaxy itself.
It doesn't help that Kara is battling some inner demons too following the loss of her mentor, Juro, and some cute alien critters who died trying to help her a few episodes prior. Will Kara save the day? Will she lose anyone else? And most crucially, will she end up losing herself?
The Ninth Jedi ending explained: Does Zima defeat Nawaam?
Kara and her friends board Nawaam's ship with her father, while local resistance forces launch an outside attack.
As they all head to the kyber cannon, Kara radios out and suggests the others focus their fire on the engines, crashing the ship so their galaxy-destroying weapon will be put out of commission.
The 'bad guy' ship emergency lands on the planet of Hy Izlan, but the cannon remains intact, so preparations are made to charge it up and fire at the 'good guys'.
Ethan tells Tafflah and the rest to run as far away as possible on their ships, but they point out nowhere is safe and that they have a score to settle now anyway.
Nawaam leaves the control room to "take care of" the intruders personally as "a mark of respect." That's when Kara's dad, Zima, shows up to take him on.
Knowing that a past evil deed of his once inspired Nawaam down this path he's chosen, Zima points out it would be irresponsible of him "to allow the weight of your crimes to grow any greater."
Kara sees them fighting then, or at least senses it through the Force, as the pair clash over their different philosophies.
"I’m no longer in need of you, Master," says Nawaam. "Nothing will stand in my way. Including you."
Zima continues to plead with his former student of sorts, trying to sway him from this path.
We only find out that he failed to do so when Nawaam suddenly appears to Kara and the others unscathed. "Let me guess," he says. "Expecting Zima?" That's when the show cruelly cuts to Zima's body, which appears to be lifeless.
Do they stop the kyber cannon in time?
Kara holds Nawaam back as Ethan, Homen and Bee-Toh head to the cannon. By the time they reach it, the weapon is already half charged and their attempts to hack the system don't work.
That means they need to destroy it. Not the cannon, but the crystal that powers it. As sacred as it is, the gang has no other choice. The problem though is that lightsabers can't cut it, and when Bee-Toh shoots at the crystal with his gun, it sparks off a mini reaction which blows up a nearby hill.
Eventually, Ethan figures out how to chip away at the crystal with a lightsaber handle, and the group gets to work.
The cannon keeps charging, but just before it fires, they finally manage to destroy the crystal, shattering it into millions of tiny pieces. Some energy is unleashed, but instead of destroying everyone, it merges with the asteroid rings wrapped around the planet, symbolically protecting the inhabitants as the crystal once did.
Droids tell Bhozn, Nawaam's second-in-command, that the engines have been destroyed, and their communication systems won't last much longer either. Sucks to be a bad guy, eh? But what about the biggest bad of all?
Does Kara defeat Nawaam?
While Ethan and the others were chipping away at that crystal, Kara was caught up in her battle with Nawaam.
"Leaders who control without compassion are doomed to be overthrown," says Kara as they fight, telling Nawaam that he's still just a little boy inside. And that "state of nothingness" he's been so desperate to achieve? It's a lie.
"Your notions of light and dark are nothing but antiquated nonsense that will never bring stability to the galaxy," insists Nawaam, believing neutrality is key. To him, the Jedi are weak because their empathy distracts them from their goals.
View Green Video on the source websiteKara quickly proves him wrong though when she hits Nawaam with her lightsaber yet leaves him miraculously unharmed. There has been too much death in her life, so Kara chooses to spare him by switching the lightsaber off at the last possible moment. In doing so, it becomes green, reflecting the positive impact this decision has made on her heart.
Nawaam continues to fight then, arguing that there's difference between good and evil, that they're "two halves of the same whole." And that's when his weapon turns red, proving that he is no longer as neutral as he thought he was.
Kara attacks Nawaam again like before and he falls to the floor, finally defeated. The voice of Zima echoes in his ears, saying "Kara has reached a point far beyond what we have attained."
And with that, Nawaam remains on the ground, all mopey. But is he dead? That out-of-body experience sure was odd. Luckily, the answer to that comes at the very end.
Why does Zima let Nawaam go?
With the day saved, Kara hears her father's voice again, just like she did in the fight against Nawaam. But this time, it's not just her imagination. It turns out Zima is alive, after all, talking to her over his comms. How though? Let's not question it.
Everyone happily reunites and then we jump ahead to an unspecified point in the near future when the gang meet around a ceremonial table in a grand hall. Each of them wears a fancy white cloak with red embroidery, including Juro who shows up as a Force ghost.
It seems they have all taken a leadership role on the planet, working to help the inhabitants move forward following Nawaam's attack.
What a cute happy ending. But wait, there's more.
In the show's final moments, we discover that Nawaam is alive in a prison cell. Zima visits him, but instead of just gloating from outside, he switches off the cell that holds Nawaam and hands him a lightsaber.
No words are exchanged. Nawaam simply breathes deep, switches the weapon on, and then we cut to black with the implication that he might have just killed Zima.
Assuming that's true, why would he do such a thing? That question applies to both parties by the way. Why would Zima free Nawaam after all the trouble he caused? And why would Nawaam murder Zima after he went to the trouble of releasing him?
There are no easy answers here, but it's important to remember just how much The Ninth Jedi likes to play in the grey areas, falling somewhere between the Light and the Dark Side. Few characters embody either extreme, operating instead with far murkier goals in mind.
Perhaps Zima felt guilty for inspiring Nawaam to go down the path he did? Perhaps they've been talking lots already and he sees a chance for redemption?
Nawaam, on the other hand, rejected his former master earlier on, and given how eager he is to reject notions of right and wrong, killing the man who freed him might help set Nawaam back on the path of neutrality that he desires so strongly.
Either way, it looks like Kara's story isn't over just yet and a second season might indeed be part of the show's wider vision.
