With a father like Andrew, who can blame Eugenie for being happier in Portugal

How clever of Princess Eugenie to give birth in Portugal, conveniently distant from her disgraced father, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, and away from the scrutiny of who pays for her London pad at Kensington Palace. Who could blame her for seeking a quieter life away from the UK and the glare of her parents’ scandal?

When to invite the grandparents over is a perennial problem for new parents. In the normal run of things, we could have expected this once tight-knit family of Andrew, Sarah, Beatrice and Eugenie to gather and gurgle around the latest arrival as soon as possible. But Andrew, whose friendship with a convicted paedophile, Jeffrey Epstein, and the lies he subsequently told, has brought the House of York crashing down; he’s now isolated and in exile at Sandringham.

His ex-wife Sarah – who has also been publicly humiliated over her fawning friendship with Epstein – has done an impressive disappearing act. Apart from one snatched picture at a luxury resort in Switzerland, she hasn’t been seen for months on end. And with further reports this week that Epstein was allegedly threatening to go public about how not only Sarah, but Beatrice and Eugenie, had enjoyed his hospitality just days after he had been released from prison, no-one is going to want to step into the spotlight any time soon.

It seems unlikely, then, that either of the proud grandparents will fetch up in Portugal, at least not openly. I’m sure Sarah in particular must be longing to meet her new granddaughter, but if she does, it’s certain to be a cloak and dagger exercise and an extra stress for parents dealing with a newborn.

Eugenie and her husband, Jack, spend a great deal of their time at their home in Portugal, where he is a marketing executive for a company selling luxury homes. It’s quite normal for them to be there — particularly in the summer, and I’m sure their house is beautiful, with beaches nearby and sunshine guaranteed.

To be fair, Eugenie and her husband are now a family of five, and Ivy Cottage – which was once used for Palace staff and workers – has just three bedrooms. Being there would also draw more attention to the row over the below market rent for the property which, in any case, is paid by the King from his private income. With their expanded family, perhaps now is the time for Jack and Eugenie to announce that they are standing on their own two feet and buying or renting a London base of their own.

Eugenie is a bright young woman who has had an exceptionally tough couple of years. Her parents are widely despised by the public, her mother has had cancer and both are now living a life in the shadows. Her joy at having a much-wanted daughter to join her two young sons is a happy interlude in a troubled story.

The fact that the little girl’s arrival was announced in a formal statement from Buckingham Palace underlines the fact that the Yorks are still very much in the line of succession. This as yet unnamed wee baby has just pushed her great uncle Edward, the Duke of Edinburgh, down one place to 16th in line to the throne. The debate about whether Andrew Mountbatten Windsor and his descendants should be removed from this list is ongoing. And it’s probably another reason why Eugenie and her family are much happier in Portugal.
