After nearly five decades spent moving through punk, grunge and alternative rock, the guitarist has plenty to celebrate.
Pat Smear turns 67 on Aug. 5, adding another milestone to a career that has placed him in three of the most influential rock groups of their eras.
Born Georg Albert Ruthenberg in Los Angeles in 1959, Smear met future Germs singer Darby Crash while the two attended an alternative school in West Los Angeles. They started the Germs as teenagers, and Smear had to teach himself guitar as the group found its footing in the city's new punk scene.
The Germs' only studio album, 1979's (GI), was produced by Joan Jett and became an important record in the development of hardcore punk. The group's original run ended after Crash died in 1980, but Smear's career was far from over.
In 1993, Nirvana recruited him as a touring guitarist ahead of the release of In Utero. Smear made his first appearance with the group on Saturday Night Live that September, then joined its final tour and the famous MTV Unplugged in New York performance.
"For me, it was really new and exciting," Smear said of joining Nirvana in a 2013 interview. "I was just a guy from a punk rock band, thrown into this huge thing."
After Nirvana ended in 1994, Dave Grohl brought Smear into Foo Fighters' first live lineup. He played on the group's 1997 album The Colour and the Shape before leaving later that year. Smear began appearing with Foo Fighters again in 2005 and officially returned as a full-time member in 2010.
The guitarist has since earned 11 Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Foo Fighters in 2021. His long history with Grohl also makes him a direct link between two of the biggest rock groups to emerge from the 1990s.
Smear remains on the road with Foo Fighters today. His birthday falls between the Aug. 4 Toronto opener of the group's 2026 Take Cover Tour and an Aug. 6 concert in Detroit, giving him the chance to celebrate 67 in the middle of another major run.
Decades after his first chaotic shows with the Germs, Smear is still playing stadiums and adding to a career that has followed alternative rock from its punk roots to its biggest stages.
