Welcome to “Paying it Forward,” a monthly interview series made possible by Piedmont Health. In this series, we hear from the folks at Piedmont about the importance of community health centers – and why they chose a career in community health.
This month, Aaron welcomes Kathleen Weiner, who came on board last year as Piedmont’s director of mission advancement. Her role is to focus on fundraising; that’s something she’s done with various nonprofits for over 25 years, but she says she’s especially excited about working for Piedmont.
“It’s so critical,” she says of Piedmont Health’s mission. “It’s easy for me to sit with a donor and teach them about our organization and ask for their support, because I believe it.”
As a federally qualified health center, Piedmont Health Services accepts all patients regardless of their insurance status. Weiner says they served over 44,000 patients last year, 46 percent of whom were uninsured – which is a lifesaving effort, but also one that does require external funding.
“We do get federal dollars, (but) as you can imagine, that’s always up and down, so the donations help quite a bit,” she says. “We see everybody, we don’t turn anybody away, and I think that’s important for folks.”
And Weiner says the direct healthcare service is only part of Piedmont’s overall mission. Among other things, she says they’re currently providing backpacks for kids, filled with essential back-to-school supplies.
And that’s just one of the ways the staff at Piedmont Health go above and beyond to help their patients get well and stay well.
“We had a patient at our PACE program, a wonderful program for taking care of elderly patients,” Weiner remembers. “(They) had a fall and needed to be in the hospital, and were not able to heal properly (because they were) worried about their pet. So one of our workers took care of the pet, for weeks, until that patient was able to heal.
“That’s what I see every day. Our staff, they really go the extra mile.”

And Weiner says there are several upcoming fundraiser events – including a community engagement breakfast Friday, October 23, from 7:30-9:00 a.m. at the Blue Hill Event Center in Chapel Hill, followed by a spaghetti dinner Wednesday, October 28, at the Carolina Club.
