A 29-year-old man has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder and kidnapping in a fatal wrong-way crash on the Dan Ryan Expressway.
According to Illinois State Police, Juan Ruiz Huerta was behind the wheel of a vehicle traveling the wrong direction on the Dan Ryan Expressway during rush hour Friday evening, where he allegedly caused a five-vehicle wreck that claimed the life of the passenger in his vehicle.
Police allege Ruiz Huerta became involved in a verbal altercation with 28-year-old Victory Swanigan as the pair were in a vehicle traveling inbound on the Dan Ryan Expressway Friday just before 6 p.m.
During that altercation, the suspect allegedly turned the vehicle around and began driving the wrong way into oncoming traffic. Ultimately, a multi-vehicle crash occurred, with Swanigan pronounced dead at the scene and Ruiz Huerta and another driver taken to local hospitals.
According to state police, Ruiz Huerta is facing three counts of first-degree murder in connection with the crash, along with charges of kidnapping, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and unlawful restraint.
