Catcher Agustin Ramirez is heading back to the Marlins, reports Kevin Barral of FishOnFirst. The young slugger will rejoin the team as part of several post-deadline roster tweaks. Miami is also activating righty Josh Ekness from the 60-day IL, per Barral. He’ll take Dax Fulton‘s spot in the bullpen. Right-hander Jack Ralston had his contract selected. He was optioned to Triple-A, but takes over one of the Marlins’ openings on the 40-man roster.
Miami has a big opening to fill at catcher/DH with Liam Hicks traded to the Rays. The 27-year-old delivered a 119 wRC+ with 14 home runs as a fixture in the middle of the lineup. He leads the club in RBI and ranks second in runs scored this season. Hicks’ breakout, along with the arrival of prospect Joe Mack, led to Ramirez’s demotion back in early May.
Ramirez put together a strong rookie campaign. The centerpiece of the Jazz Chisholm Jr. trade popped 21 home runs and stole 16 bases in his first taste of the majors. Ramirez entered the 2026 season as an everyday player, splitting his time between catcher and DH. He scuffled to a .663 OPS through 31 games.
Part of the reason, and perhaps the main impetus, for Ramirez’s demotion was his defense behind the plate. He posted a miserable -14 Defensive Runs Saved in 2025. He wasn’t much better through a month of action this year, with -4 DRS across 148 2/3 innings. It remains to be seen whether Miami will use Ramirez as a catcher moving forward. He did play the field for most of his time at Triple-A this year, with 49 appearances at catcher to just 10 games at DH. Mack is an excellent defender, so if Ramirez does get any work behind the plate, it’ll be in a part-time capacity.
Ekness missed all of June and July with a calf strain. He debuted with the club this season and made six appearances before the injury. The right-hander only allowed one earned run, but had five walks to five strikeouts in 5 1/3 frames.
Miami did not move any high-leverage relievers at the trade deadline, with Pete Fairbanks most notably remaining with the club. The Marlins traded Lake Bachar to the Pirates and brought in Victor Vodnik in a deal with the Rockies. Ekness does have a save this season, though his likely ticketed for middle-relief work.
Ralston finds his way onto a 40-man roster for the first time in his pro career. The 28-year-old was drafted by the Cardinals back in 2018. He’d spent his entire time in the organization up until this season. Ralston elected minor league free agency over the winter and latched on with Miami. He’s had a strong season at Triple-A, delivering 55 innings of a 1.31 ERA and a 32% strikeout rate with Jacksonville. He’s now one step closer to the big leagues with this roster move.
Fulton had been used mostly as a long reliever. He covered 14 innings across six games with the big-league squad. The lefty posted a 4.50 ERA with an average strikeout rate and an unsightly 17.5% walk rate. Fulton is in his second minor league option year.
