In 1965, the band released two studio albums, Kinda Kinks and The Kink Kontroversy, followed by its first American tour.
Breaking into the mainstream, The Kinks embarked on a relentless promotional campaign, including efforts to expand their presence in the U.S. However, the summer trip didn't go as planned.
The band's schedule was derailed by a series of controversies, including reported disputes with promoters, missed appearances and allegations that Ray Davies punched an official from the American Federation of Musicians.
Although the band completed its series of shows in June and July shows and appeared on U.S. television programs like Hullabaloo on NBC, Shindig! on ABC, Where the Action Is on ABC and The Red Skelton Show on CBS, The Kinks were banned after the union refused to issue their performance permits.
"The reason we got banned was a mixture of bad agency, bad management, bad luck, and bad behavior,” Ray Davies shared during a book signing in 2013, as cited by Collider.
The ban lasted four years and ended only after the band signed what the vocalist described as a confession of guilt.
“We literally signed a confession -- it was a confessional. We didn’t even read it,” he said.
After the ban, The Kinks returned to the U.K. and continued releasing acclaimed albums, including Face to Face (1966), Something Else (1967) and The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society (1968).
The band went on to release several more records before issuing its final studio album, Phobia, in 1993 and officially disbanding in 1996.
