Mary Rivera, a beloved actress who played Ned Leeds' Filipino grandmother in Spider-Man: No Way Home, has died at the age of 82, TMZ reports.
Rivera died on April 15 in Honolulu.
A family member told the outlet that Rivera "suffered a stroke, and doctors warned the family her condition was extremely serious."
"The relative says doctors told them even if Mary emerged from the coma, her prognosis would not be good, so the family made the difficult decision to remove her from life support," TMZ added.
The family member further detailed that it was her family that encouraged her to audition for the role, which she ultimately landed in the 2021 hit Marvel movie. In a 2022 interview with Hawaiʻi Public Radio, Rivera's daughter Angie Kelly detailed exactly how it came about.
"I happened to be on a friend's Facebook scrolling, and I see an ad, a casting call looking for a local Hawaiʻi Filipina grandmother between the age of 50 and 90. And immediately I thought, 'Oh, well my mom qualifies and checks off all those boxes,'" she said. "They just asked her to talk about herself and why she wanted to do the role. So she just gave a brief history of her time in the Philippines and what brought her to the United States, and raising her four children and 11 grandchildren — and basically that that is her biggest accomplishment of everything that she's done.
"My mom has worn many hats over the years. She was a radio broadcaster, a teacher, but most notable was her role as a mother and grandmother."
Fans paid tribute following the sad news.
"I was just watching her when she asked Andrew’s Spider-Man to clean the caw webs ?rip ??," one person commented.
"The people behind the scenes and supporting roles are just as much a part of what makes films memorable. May Mary Rivera be remembered for her contributions," another person posted.
She is survived by her husband, her children, 11 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
