Rays To Acquire Tyler Wells

The Rays are acquiring right-hander Tyler Wells from the Orioles, according to various reports. Prospect Michael Forret is going back to the O’s. It’s unclear if that’s the whole deal or if more players are involved. The Rays will need to open a 40-man spot for Wells.

Wells, 31, was a decent back-end starter earlier in his career. He missed most of the 2024 and 2025 seasons due to surgery on the ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow. He is having a healthy season here in 2026 but the O’s have moved him to the bullpen.

He is doing well in the new role. He has logged 54 innings out of the Baltimore bullpen this year with a 2.67 earned run average. He has gotten a bit of help from a .241 batting average on balls in play and 76.8% strand rate but his 25.1% strikeout rate and 6.2% walk rate are both good figures. His 3.41 FIP and 3.47 SIERA are a bit pessimistic about his ERA but still point to him generally doing good work.

Wells is in his third of four arbitration seasons as a Super Two guy. Due to his surgery and the time he missed, he is making a fairly modest $2.445MM salary this year. There’s about $720K of that still to be paid out. He can be retained through 2027 and would be due a nice raise after this year’s success.

The Orioles came into the deadline as a borderline buy/sell team and president of Mike Elias said that the club would straddle both sides of that line. However, all of their moves so far have been of the seller variety, at least for players with a short window of control. Impending free agent Taylor Ward was sent to the Mariners. Dean Kremer and Adley Rutschman, both free agents after 2027, were sent to the Twins and Red Sox, respectively. Now Wells, also controlled through 2027, is heading to Tampa.

For the Rays, they are much more firmly in buyer mode. They are 65-46, the best record in the American League. They are playing not only for a playoff berth but a division title and first-round bye. They have been aggressively adding to the roster ahead of the deadline. They have added Freddy Peralta to their rotation, Liam Hicks to the lineup and now Wells to the bullpen. Tampa’s bullpen has a middling 4.02 ERA, 15th in the majors. Bryan Baker is a really strong closer but Wells adds another leverage option alongside guys like Garrett Cleavinger and Kevin Kelly.

Forret, 22, goes back to the team that drafted him. The O’s sent him to Tampa less than a year ago, as part of the trade that netted them Shane Baz. Baseball America currently lists Forret as the #8 prospect in the Rays’ system. They project him as a potential mid-rotation starter thanks to his command and his diverse arsenal. He has a four-seamer, sinker, curveball, sweeper, changeup and kick change.

He has split this year between Double-A and Triple-A, with ten starts at the former at nine at the latter. Put together, he has logged 93 innings this year with a 3.29 earned run average. His 10.4% walk rate is a bit high, especially considering the reputation about his command, but he has punched out 26.6% of batters faced and induced grounders on 41.5% of balls in play.

Since he has reached Triple-A, he will be a candidate for the Baltimore rotation in the near term. The O’s have added a lot to their rotation pipeline today, as they also got Anthony Eyanson and Kyson Witherspoon in the Rutschman deal. The trade deadline is only minutes away but the O’s will likely flip Trevor Rogers before it’s too late, since he’s an impending free agent. The Rays might also have another move up their sleeves, as they could use help in the middle infield.
