Bruce Springsteen is looking ahead with hope, as his wife, Patti Scialfa, has gone into remission after being diagnosed with blood cancer.
The legendary rocker appeared virtually at Boston’s Pan-Mass Challenge fundraiser, which raises money for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute to support cancer research and treatment. He revealed that his wife is now cancer-free, more than eight years since she was diagnosed.
Scialfa was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2018 and kept the news of her diagnosis private until making it public in 2024. According to the Mayo Clinic, it's a type of cancer "that forms in a type of white blood cell called a plasma cell." The cancerous plasma buildup in the bone marrow and crowd out the healthy blood cells, creating proteins that don't work correctly. They report that multiple myeloma is a "slow-growing" form of cancer.
“As you know, Patti’s been living with her multiple myeloma for over eight years, but now, thankfully, she is in remission," revealed Springsteen.
“However, like millions of families facing cancer, we’ve learned what every patient learns: Hope has a face. It’s our physician, who refuses to stop searching and caring. It’s our nurse, who sits beside us when we are scared."
Springsteen applauded Dana-Farber for diligence in care and research as they treated his wife, and believes her journey "taught us something." He adds that he hopes people understand, "Medical research isn’t an idea. It isn’t politics. It isn’t a line in a budget.”
“It’s the reason families find hope when hope seems hardest to find,” Springsteen continued. “When we lose sight of that, we lose sight of one another, and that’s too high a price for anyone to pay.”
The rocker ended his message by saying that he and his wife are grateful for everything the foundation has done. Scialfa made the news of her cancer public when she appeared in the Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band documentary. She revealed having stepped back from touring due to the challenges from the cancer that affected her immune system.
“This affects my immune system, so I just have to be careful what I choose to do and where I choose to go,” she explained. “Every once in a while, I come to a show or two and I can sing a few songs on stage, and that’s been a treat. That’s the new normal for me right now, and I’m OK with that."
Springsteen and his wife have been together for about 37 years, after Scialfa auditioned to join the E Street Band in 1984. The two started as friends, and it soon turned romantic after Springsteen separated from his first wife. In 1991, the two were married and welcomed three children by 1994.
