Farmington man accused of stealing someone’s identity to qualify for apartment

FARMINGTON, N.Y. — A Farmington man is facing charges after State Police say he used fake documents and stole someone’s personal information to qualify for an apartment.

Kevin Whitman, 28, is charged with identity theft, grand larceny, criminal possession of a forged instrument, making a false financial statement, and scheme to defraud.

State Police say the investigation started in April after a victim reported their personal identifying information had been used without her permission in connection to a residential lease.

Investigators say they learned that Whitman had used fake documents, including another person’s income and financial information to qualify for an apartment lease. They say after the fake documents were accepted, Whitman didn’t pay rent.

As a result, investigators say the apartment lost more than $14,000.

Whitman was arrested on July 30 following the execution of a search warrant. He was processed and brought to the Ontario County Jail.
