Emmerdale airs Joe Tate development following Billy Fletchers attack in early ITVX release

Who attacked Billy Fletcher (Jay Kontzle) in Emmerdale?

That's the question on everybody's lips, and in today's episode, we edged one step closer to finding out.

Last week, the factory worker was found unconscious on the floor of the Caleb Miligan International depot with blood spilling from his head. It happened just hours after Joe Tate (Ned Porteous) had been made aware of his brief kiss with ex-wife Dawn Fletcher (Olivia Bromley).

As viewers know, Joe and Dawn are engaged to be married, and he was already aware of potential underlying feelings between the former couple.

When he was still unaware of the kiss, Joe was reluctant to believe that his fiancée would betray him and decided to ask Billy to be one of his groomsmen. He hoped that, by inviting Billy into the inner circle, he'd be able to see whether there were any signs of affection.

Just hours later, Joe's uncle Caleb Miligan (William Ash) explained that Billy had confided in him about the kiss. But would he really jeopardise things with Dawn by attacking him?

Well, the police certainly thought so. Caleb had noted to the investigating officer that Joe was privy to Dawn's infidelity, meaning that there would be a motive for the assault.

As Billy recovered from a lethal head injury in hospital, Joe was arrested for GBH and brought into the station.

However, despite the arrest, there was no physical or concrete evidence to suggest that he was responsible. CCTV footage from the depot had been wiped to prevent owner Caleb Miligan's (William Ash) dodgy stolen car parts operation being uncovered.

With Joe released, Dawn confirmed her confidence in his claims that he wasn't responsible. He took opportunity then to quiz Caleb on why he sobbed him in, and suggested that it could've been someone who knew about the illegal scheme.

Caleb's wife Ruby (Beth Cordingly) then arrived, and got up to speed on his dealings. She wasn't happy, and was intrigued when he said that Joe would eventually get what was coming for him.

Could it be that Caleb has set Joe up?
