Beloved 80s Rock Legend Reveals He Came Terrifyingly Close to Death in 2024

Phil Collins is talking about the most frightening chapter of his life, and just how close his family came to losing him.

In a new interview with The Sunday Times shared Sunday, August 2, the rocker revealed that a battle with alcohol addiction led to a life-threatening health crisis in late 2023 and early 2024 that left him unconscious in intensive care for months.

"My kidneys were packing up, my organs were just seizing up," Collins, 75, recalled to the outlet. "People were coming to say goodbye. But I don't remember them coming. I didn't have no idea this was going on. They were all worried that they wouldn't see me again. It could all have gone so terribly wrong."

The singer said all five of his children—Joely, 53, Simon, 49, Lily, 37, Nicholas, 25, and Matthew, 18—rushed to be by his side as doctors weighed difficult decisions. "There were some decisions to be made about 'Do we keep Phil on life support?' kind of thing," he shared.

Collins ended up spending seven months recovering in the hospital and says the experience changed his life. "I was very lucky to have come out of that," he said. "Needless to say, I haven't had a drink since."

Collins first hinted at the severity of his health struggles during an appearance on the BBC podcast Eras months ago. There, he described having "a difficult, frustrating few years" after undergoing five knee surgeries and confirmed he had spent months hospitalized because of his drinking.

The Genesis frontman has faced numerous health challenges over the past decade, including nerve damage stemming from the group’s 2007 reunion tour that left him unable to play drums and, at times, unable to walk without assistance. In recent photos released alongside the BBC interview, however, Collins appears noticeably healthier and said he now considers himself "totally mobile and healthy," adding, "I can walk," albeit with the help of crutches.

In a separate interview with BBC Breakfast in May, he said he turned down performing at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and doesn’t feel he’ll be ready to hit the stage any time soon—if at all. “I can’t really see it happening. But I’m healthier now than I have been for quite a while,” he said. “They asked me if I would perform and I said no, because you’ve got to be match fit to do something like that.”

Collins was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2010 with Genesis.
