Marian Starr Driver, beloved teacher, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and faithful friend, passed away peacefully on August 1, 2026. She leaves behind a lifetime of love, faith, and joyful memories.
Marian Starr Watson was born on December 23, 1929, in DeKalb County, Tennessee, to Alpha Roy Watson and Vinnie Tennessee Fitts Watson. She was raised on her family’s farm in Wildcat Hollow alongside her older sister, Jessie Mae, and brother, Rufe Martin. The Watson family farm had been in the family for generations and was always a special place to Marian. Years later, much of that land became part of Center Hill Lake after the dam was built, but the memories she made there stayed with her throughout her life.
She graduated from Gordonsville High School in 1948 and attended Tennessee Tech University, where she studied for nearly three years before beginning her teaching career in Smith County.
On March 16, 1952, Marian married Robert Sam Driver. In 1953, they moved to Detroit, Michigan. During their five years in Michigan, they welcomed their two sons, Robert Watson and John.
The family returned to Tennessee in 1958, and Marian went back to doing what she loved most, teaching. Known to generations of students as Mrs. Driver, she taught at Club Springs and Bowling’s Branch in Smith County and later at Shop Springs and Watertown schools in Wilson County. She cared deeply about her students and stayed in touch with many of them as they grew into adulthood and began their careers. While teaching, she continued taking classes at Middle Tennessee State University and Cumberland University as she worked toward completing her bachelor’s degree.
Marian was a longtime member of Watertown Baptist Church. Her faith guided the way she lived and the way she treated others. She was known for her positive attitude and her unwavering love for the Lord.
More than anything else, Marian loved her family. She was proud of her nieces, nephews, and her two sons. She found so much joy in her family, especially being a grandmother and great-grandmother.
Marian was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Sam Driver; her parents, Alpha Roy Watson and Vinnie Tennessee Fitts Watson; her sister, Jesse Mae; her brother, Rufe Martin; and her beloved granddaughter, Rachel Maegan Driver.
She is survived by her sons, Watson (Kay) Driver and John Driver; her grandchildren, Lance (Emily) Driver, Katharine Driver, Brooke (Brian) Cummings, and Allison Driver; her great grandchildren, Tim, Dylan, Andrew, and baby Marian Claire Driver, who is expected later this year; as well as her beloved nieces, nephews, dear friends, and former students.
Marian lived a life centered on faith, family, and serving others. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.
The family finds comfort in knowing Marian is home with the Lord and reunited with those who went before her. They are thankful for the many years they were blessed to share with her and for the love, faith, and kindness she showed them each day. They will treasure her memory, honor her legacy, and look forward to the joyful day they are reunited with her again in their Heavenly Home.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, August 4, 2026 at Hunter Funeral Home with Bro. Don Mathis and Bro. Mike Burns officiating. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 10 a.m. till service time. Pallbearers will be Lance Driver, Brian Cummings, Jake Flory, Tim Driver, David Watson and Mike Trusty. Interment will follow at the Commerce Cemetery.
The family would especially like to thank the staff at the Maristone Senior Living in Mt. Juliet and the Pavilion Rehab in Lebanon.
