Steven Eugene Hawk, MD was beloved by his family, friends and patients as he was a quiet, intelligent man who firmly believed that you should treat others how you would like to be treated. He passed away in his home in Leesburg, Florida on June 14, 2026, surrounded by his family at the age of 75.
He was born in Philadelphia, PA and grew up in the peaceful, small town of St. Charles, MN about an hour away from the Twin Cities. As a boy, he was a proud member of the Boy Scouts of America along with his older brothers Charlie and Elliott. The mischievous trio loved canoeing and camping throughout the wilderness. His best friend Dale Loeffler often joined them on weeklong adventures in the great outdoors. They learned to hunt, fish and work together as a team.
After graduating Concordia College in 1973, he went onto Hahnemann Medical College and Hospital leading to his residency in family medicine at the University of Iowa in Davenport, IA. He met his future wife Lois during his Emergency Room training rotation. With some encouragement from fellow physician and friend Sam Sandberg, Steve worked up the confidence to ask the young, beautiful nurse out on a date.
In April of 1981, Steven and Lois were married in the Quad Cities in Illinois, which was an amazing celebration of their love. A couple of years later, when the couple moved to Carthage, TN, their children Stephanie and Eric were born. By 1986, they moved to Leesburg, Florida where they raised their family together. He was a supportive father showing up to their many school programs, orchestra concerts and other extracurricular events. One of his favorite family trips was a vacation to the Badlands and Yellowstone National Park, where he rode in a helicopter with Eric.
Steven’s true passion was being a family medicine physician. Like his father Dale J. Hawk, MD before him, he was a devoted physician who passionately believed that providing excellent primary care with a patient focused experience would lead to their best long-term outcomes. He treated his patients with dignity and respect. Throughout his career, he practiced medicine in Iowa, Tennessee, Minnesota, Illinois and Florida. His most unique job was in Carthage, TN, where he was the only primary care physician in several counties. From delivering babies, assisting with surgeries to helping manage any ailment that walked in the door, he gained a wealth of experience, which he took with him for the rest of his career.
Steven was creative and loved photography creating collages for his family and friends. He would join his Minnesota family for an annual fishing trip at Pine Point Resort, and the photos taken proudly decorated his clinic’s wall. Using his skills as a photographer, he made gifts ranging from personalized birthday cards with delightful to witty messages to beautifully framed artwork.
Another one of his passions was golf. He enjoyed playing golf with his friends and family. He particularly loved to spend time with his parents on the Pennbrooke Fairways links. When he wasn’t playing golf, he would help his mother find the perfect pinecones to make Christmas ornaments or search for spare golf balls in the surrounding shrubs. When he visited Stephanie and Patrick in Tampa, they would frequently play at TopGolf to relax and recharge. At home he would walk his Labrador Retrievers whenever he could, playing fetch at the nearby park.
Steve was a truly wonderful person and will be missed by many. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Dale and Vivian Hawk and his oldest brother and life-long best friend, Charlie Hawk, DDS. He is survived by his
wife Lois with whom he shared over 45 years of marriage; his daughter Stephanie and her husband Patrick MacIver, who both followed in his footsteps by becoming physicians; his son Eric and his wife, Dawn (both PhD’s in Music); and granddaughter, Lilu who reside in Sugar Hill, Georgia; and his 15-year-old black lab Ellie.
As Steve always said, “keep smiling and keep the faith!”
Steve was cremated and will be buried in his hometown cemetery in Saint Charles, MN following a private memorial service at a later date.
