Few rock singers have remained the unmistakable voice of a band for nearly five decades. But that's exactly whatJoe Elliotthas done.
The Def Leppard frontman celebrates his 67th birthday on Aug. 1 after helping transform the Sheffield, England, band into one of the biggest rock acts of the 1980s. Elliott remains the group's only original lead singer, still fronting Def Leppard as the band continues to tour and record new music nearly 50 years after its formation.
Elliott's journey with Def Leppard almost never happened. In 1977, the 18-year-old originally tried out for the Sheffield band, then known as Atomic Mass, as a guitarist after a chance meeting with guitarist Pete Willis. During the audition, however, it became clear that Elliott belonged behind the microphone instead. He also suggested the name "Deaf Leopard," later modified to the now-famous Def Leppard spelling.
Within the band, Elliott is clearly regarded as the peacemaker—the band's official website says his nickname within the band is "The Diplomat," which is high praise considering the number of volatile frontmen in the history of rock and roll.
Def Leppard formed just as punk was reshaping British music, but Elliott said the band never wanted to follow that trend.
"We liked punk but didn't want to be in a punk band," he told Metro in 2010, explaining that he was still buying records by Queen and Thin Lizzy while many of his peers were embracing punk.
The band's breakthrough came with 1983's Pyromania, powered by hit singles including "Photograph," "Rock of Ages" and "Foolin'." The album sold more than six million copies in 1983 alone and helped launch Def Leppard into arena-rock superstardom. Four years later, Hysteria became an even bigger phenomenon, producing seven Billboard Hot 100 hits, including the No. 1 smash "Love Bites," while "Pour Some Sugar on Me" became the band's signature anthem.
Reflecting on finally scoring the band's first No. 1 single with "Love Bites," Elliott admitted to Billboard that the achievement meant just as much as topping the album chart.
"It's strange because we'd been to No. 1 with the album. So now we wanted a No. 1 single because we'd never had one. So it was like, 'come on! come on!' When we got there, it was, as you can imagine, a 'yes!' moment."
He added that they didn't think "Love Bites" could beat out another iconic 1988 hit.
"I remember it nearly not getting to No. 1. I remember being told we probably wouldn’t get [there] because 'Red Red Wine' by UB40 was going to pip us," said Elliott.
Def Leppard's success has remained remarkably enduring. The band has sold more than 100 million records worldwide, earned Diamond certifications for both Pyromania and Hysteria, and became one of only five rock bands with two original studio albums selling more than 10 million copies each in the United States. In 2019, Elliott and his bandmates were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame by Queen guitarist Brian May.
Even after decades of arena tours and multi-platinum albums, Elliott has said making music still gives him the same excitement he felt as a teenager. Speaking to Metro while promoting his side project Down 'n' Outz, he explained that stepping away from Def Leppard for a short time reminded him why he fell in love with music in the first place.
"After you have a hit like Hysteria and you're signed to the corporate machine it becomes an albatross around your neck," Elliott said. "As much as our music is anthemic rock'n'roll it's a business at the end of the day. It's stressful and gets harder each time you make a record. No one's comparing this to Hysteria, it's got nothing to do with it. It's a refreshing change. It's like being a teenager in a 50-year-old body."
Critics, however, have consistently praised Elliott's distinctive voice. In its ranking of the greatest hair metal singers of all time, Ultimate Classic Rock called him "a monster vocalist," writing that his "charismatic and powerful" voice could handle everything from soaring ballads to hard-driving rock anthems.
Elliott isn't slowing down, either. Def Leppard released the single "Rejoice" in January 2026 as the first taste of the band's upcoming 13th studio album, which is expected in early 2027. Nearly five decades after joining the group as a teenager, the only original singer of one of rock's biggest bands is still making new music.
