2 charged with first-degree murder after dismembered body found in Lake Mattoon

Two suspects have been charged with first-degree murder in downstate Cumberland County after a dismembered body was found in Lake Mattoon last month, authorities said.

Illinois State Police said Friday charges have been filed against James Adams, 26, and Robin Turner, 62.

Prosecutors previously alleged that two individuals attempted to dispose of the body in the lake by placing it in a trash bag and using weights to make it sink. However, a dismembered arm was discovered by a boater in late June, ultimately leading investigators to arrest both men.

According to prosecutors, 38-year-old Dalewayne Turner, a resident of suburban Plainfield, was fatally stabbed, and his body was dismembered after the crime.

According to court documents, prosecutors allege Turner’s half-brother, James Adams, stabbed him to death and concealed his body in the basement of his home for an extended period of time. Adams, along with Dalewayne’s wife, Robin Turner, allegedly dismembered the body, put it inside a trash bag and brought it to Lake Mattoon.

Authorities say the pair put weights in the bag in an effort to keep the remains submerged, but a boater spotted an arm floating in the water on June 28. Dalewayne Turner’s body was later recovered during an investigation, and Robin Turner and Adams were taken into police custody.

It is alleged in court documents that Adams and Robin Turner admitted to dismembering the body in conversations with Steven Turner, Dalewayne’s brother.

Prosecutors allege Adams fatally stabbed Dalewayne during a fight, and admitted to the killing in an interview with police, saying it was self-defense.

According to court documents, the suspects dismembered the body and stashed it in a freezer in the basement of their home. Prosecutors further allege they used bleach to cover up the smell, and they repainted the home following the killing. The pair is also accused of removing wood panels and carpeting in the home and burning them outside in a firepit.

It is then alleged that two plastic totes were used to transport Dalewayne’s remains to Lake Mattoon, and five-pound weights were placed into bags in an attempt to sink them to the bottom of the lake. The totes were then discovered by a resident near the lake, state police said.

Under questioning from police, Steven Turner said Adams and Robin Turner both told him that Dalewayne had become violent during an altercation in the home, and that Adams had stabbed him multiple times. Steven Turner said he didn’t observe any injuries to either suspect, and he called police immediately after hearing the confession.

Court documents alleged that after Dalewayne Turner’s death, Robin Turner searched Google for numerous topics related to homicide or a cover-up of a killing, including whether overdoses of various drugs could be fatal, and whether bodies “had to be embalmed” after death.

Both suspects were previously charged with concealment of a homicidal death and dismemberment of a body, according to prosecutors.
