“Repeated downpours” with embedded thunderstorms are in the Chicago area forecast for Friday and into Saturday, just as hundreds of thousands concertgoers will be in Grant Park for days two and three of Lollapalooza for 2026.

Both Lollapalooza and Chicago officials encouraged attendees to “dress for the weather” and check conditions before heading to Grant Park.
“We’re constantly monitoring the weather,” Lollapalooza’s website said. “Keep an eye on the radar before heading to Grant Park so you can dress accordingly (rain boots, ponchos, etc).” The festival also has ponchos at bodegas onsite for purchase.
Umbrellas, towels, tents and other canopy structures are prohibited at the festival, but shelters will be activated in cases of extreme weather. That includes lightning, tornadoes, hailstorms or other weather events, the Chicago Office of Emergency Management said.
“Attendees should be aware of the emergency evacuation shelter sites located in the Grant Park North, Grant Park South and Millennium Lakeside Garages,” OEMC said. “The evacuation shelter sites can be accessed through the vehicle entrance on Michigan Avenue.”
In the event of a weather evacuation, all attendees should follow the instructions, Lollapalooza said, and signage will be posted.
“There’s no safe place outdoors in Grant Park to get away from lightning,” NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Pete Sack said. “You’re going to have to find a good structure to get inside.”

The rain moving in was expected to create muddy conditions at Grant Park as day two of the festival continues.
Rain will likely be light for much of the daytime hours Friday, Sack said. About 3 p.m. however, some embedded thunderstorms could pop-up around Chicago, with more thunderstorms out to the west to follow.
Winds will start to pick up along the lakefront as well, with gusts as high as 30 mph at times.
By about 9 p.m., more thunderstorms could move in.
“If you’re at Lollapalooza and security tells you to seek shelter, this is why,” Sack said.
More rain was expected overnight, with heavy downpours at times. Strong wind gusts will continue into Saturday, with more rain during the day and scattered showers going into the evening.
“Grant Park is going to be rather windy,” Sack said.
In case of an emergency, attendees will receive safety messages from the Lollapalooza app, on video screens at the festival, through announcements at all stages and posted to social media.
Attendees are also encouraged to text LOLLA to 62041 for festival updates.
“OEMC works closely with the City’s public safety departments, the Chicago Park District and C3 Presents to plan well in advance of the popular event to ensure the safety of performers, music fans and residents,” the city said. “Participants are urged to be familiar with the surrounding area and to heed warnings, if need be.”
