The public can hear directly from Alzheimer’s experts on Saturday about the latest developments in research and clinical care.

“Date With A Cure” is an annual research forum that allows the community to learn about scientific advancements and to get their questions about Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias answered.

The free event is hosted by Alzheimer’s San Diego, an organization that provides care, education and support to those suffering from all different types of dementia. It will be held at San Diego Oasis in Rancho Bernardo from 10 a.m. to noon.

The panel includes Dr. Paul Aisen from the USC Alzheimer’s Therapeutic Research Institute, Dr. James Brewer from the UC San Diego Shiley-Marcos Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center, Dr. Paulette Cazares from Sharp HealthCare, Dr. Jerold Chum from the Sanford Prebys Medical Discovery Institute and Dr. Hector M. González from the UC San Diego School of Medicine.

Although registration for the event is closed, the public can watch the forum live through CBS 8’s website, app or YouTube channel.

Before “Date With A Cure,” there will be a Research and Community Resource Fair from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. for attendees to learn more about local Alzheimer’s and dementia clinical trials.  Vendors also will be available to provide information to people caring for someone with dementia, according to Eugenia Welch, President and CEO of Alzheimer’s San Diego.

Welch said that the forum brings together the top researchers in San Diego County.

“A lot of people don’t know how much research really is going on here in San Diego County, but we have world-class research facilities right here in our own backyard,” Welch said.

The professionals on the panel don’t take traditional doctor’s appointments, Welch said, so the event is a great opportunity for those curious about their own health, or the health of loved ones, to have their questions answered.

“This is really a chance to hear good facts from people who really know what’s going on and who are working the hardest to try to find a cure,” Welch said.

Alzheimer’s disease is a type of dementia that affects memory, thinking and behavior, according to the Alzheimer’s Association.

More than 100,000 people have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia in San Diego County. That number is expected to grow to 115,000 by 2030, according to Alzheimer’s San Diego.
