It’s often difficult just getting a streaming network to renew a show after the first season. Yet, Disney+ quickly renewed Wonder Man for a second season, following a strong debut and resounding support from the critics.
So, what happened? Why would Marvel cancel one of its own shows after such a success? It turns out that the writers’ room for Wonder Man Season 2 was never opened, but the reason for that was never shared when Variety broke the news. All the writers have been released to work on other projects, and there are many other Marvel shows and movies in the works.
The benefit of the Marvel universe is that the shows and movies are all interconnected. This allows for characters from this ill-fated show to turn up if the storyline allows and the schedules can be worked out. Daredevil: Born Again Season 3 is currently in the works and slated for a 2027 release, and VisionQuest is a series slated for a 2026 release.
Created by Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Guest, Wonder Man debuted in January 2026 to rave reviews. It currently holds a 91% Rotten Tomatoes score from the critics, with many people grateful that the show took a slightly different approach to the rest of the MCU. There’s more humor and snark to Wonder Man, creating a different feel that connects to more people watching TV.
There were some questions about the success of the show at first. Disney+ doesn’t release any of its viewership data, and the series only spent a week in the Top 10 on the platform during the week of its release. That led to concerns that it would be canceled, but Disney+ pleasantly surprised everyone with the renewal in March 2026.
It’s not like Wonder Man didn’t get any attention during the Emmy nominations, either. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, making it clear that The Powers That Be are watching!
It’s possible that the cancellation is linked to budget concerns, but even that doesn’t work in Marvel’s favor to shelve this project. Out of all the shows and movies, this one needed the least graphics and post-production work that would cost millions of dollars, so it would have been best to keep for potential low-budget success.
The world of the MCU will continue to grow. Cretton will continue to work within the MCU, especially after his work as director on Spider-Man: Brand New Day. He is expected to work on a movie featuring Nurato, and there are also talks of more movies featuring your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. The end of the year will also see Avengers: Doomsday, and there are plans for movies focused on Ghost Rider and Shang-Chi.
