UNC head coach Bill Belichick addressed the media at the Kenan Football Center as the Tar Heels opened their fall training camp Thursday morning. It was Belichick’s first public appearance since the university announced Monday that general manager Michael Lombardi was being put on paid administrative leave for what is being reported as an HR complaint. The same morning as Belichick’s press conference, UNC Vice Chancellor for Communications and Marketing Dean Stoyer had sent a follow-up email clarifying Lombardi’s leave.
Stoyer said the school “is in the process of investigating” allegations against Lombardi, and that because of confidential personnel issues, it “will not comment on the nature of the allegations or discuss personnel information.”
Associate Athletics Director for Football Communications Brandon Faber, who handles all media duties for Belichick, reiterated that point before the head coach took the podium, saying all coaches and players were “prohibited” from addressing the situation.
Nevertheless, Belichick was asked how his program would be filling in for Lombardi during the paid leave, which can last a maximum of 30 days before a decision on his future is reached.
“We’re working through some things,” Belichick said. “We’re taking it day to day and working through the things that are on the table now… we’ve made a few adjustments, but we’re working through the process.”
With regards to his program’s on-field performance, Belichick expressed optimism that the Tar Heels are headed in the right direction, even as the team is coming off a disappointing 4-8 season in his first year of leadership. Writers do not share Belichick’s bullish outlook: they picked his team to finish 15th out of 17 teams in the ACC this coming season.
“We’ve made a lot of progress, and we continue to do that,” Belichick said, referring to his team as a “developmental program.” “The guys that are here have worked really hard. We’ve seen a ton of improvement from them.
“We’ve had a good recruiting class. We’ll see how the commits actually end up falling for the 2027 group, but we’ve already had a lot of good commits there, and we’re not done yet. If you keep bringing in good players and your players keep improving, your program’s headed in a positive direction. We’ll continue to get better… I need to continue to do a better job.”
Still, there were things that Belichick absolutely would not address. Toward the end of his press conference, he was asked about a reported investigation of the program by the College Sports Commission, which oversees NCAA and NIL rules across the country. The CSC probe has been rumored to be linked to Lombardi’s leave.
“Next question,” Belichick said.
Then he walked off to the practice facility.
