A Steak n’ Shake is set to open in the Tuscaloosa area in late 2026. The restaurant will sit close to historic downtown Northport near the intersection of Bridge Avenue and Lurleen B. Wallace Boulevard.
The location is owned by Ric Mayers, a businessman and owner of Two Dimes. Mayers partnered with local influencer Tyler Hearing, who has also been involved with Two Dimes and promoting other local businesses.
Mayers has attempted to bring the restaurant to the area before, but was only successful recently. In an interview with Patch, Mayers said the “breakthrough” came while at a wedding for an advisor for President Donald Trump, where he met the company’s CEO and the brand’s owner.
“I talked to [the owner] for about 30 seconds,” Mayers said. “He looked at me and said, ‘We’re going to do business together.’”
Steak ‘n Shake was founded in Illinois in 1934, and is best known for its steakburgers, shakes and beef tallow fries. The chain operates locations in three Alabama cities; Huntsville, Mobile and Decatur.
The brand announced in February 2025 it was working to move away from using seed oils in their fried menu options and buns. The company switched to beef tallow and is making further changes to products to align with Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s “Make America Healthy Again” initiative.
“We can’t wait to bring this iconic American brand to our community,” Hearing wrote in the announcement post on Facebook. “Stay tuned…the best is yet to come.”
