Local eggs, bread, milk prices face 3% increase since Iran War began in March

The on-again off-again war with Iran has caused a spike in the prices of many things – from gas to groceries.

News10NBC’s Tom Kowalski checked on prices locally and spoke with shoppers about how today’s prices have affected them.

He first stopped by five local grocery store chains – Wegmans, Aldi, Tops, PriceRite, and Walmart – to find out the price of five local grocery store staples – a gallon of milk, a loaf of bread, a dozen eggs, a pound of ground beef, and a can of green beans. He then compared the price of these items to each store, and the price of these items just three months ago when the War in Iran started.

    Grocery price comparisons

    Eggs

The first thing he looked for was a dozen eggs. In March, it cost an average of $1.76.

Today, the average cost of eggs is $1.56 – an 11% decrease from March, with the lowest cost being just $1.46 at Aldi’s.

Other stores had similar costs. Wegmans sells eggs for $1.49; Tops sells eggs for $1.69; PriceRite sells eggs for $1.59; and Walmart sells eggs for $1.47.

    Bread

In March, the average price was $1.50. Today, the average cost was $1.54 – a slight increase of just 2.6%. The cheapest place? Once again, Aldi, at $1.45.

Wegmans sells bread for $1.49; Tops sells it for $1.79; PriceRite sells it for $1.59; and Walmart sells it for $1.48.

    Milk

Next, Kowalski looked for a gallon of milk. In March, the average cost was $3.10. Today? $3.47 – an 11% increase, again with Aldi being the cheapest option at $3.31.

Wegmans sells milk for $3.49; Tops sells it for $3.84; PriceRite sells it for $3.39; and Walmart sells it for $3.32.

So far, the total cost of these three grocery store staples have increased over 3% since March.

    Canned green beans

Kowalski also wanted to compare produce like canned green beans across stores. Why green beans? It’s cheap, accessible, and found at every store.

This time, Wegmans took the crown for cheapest option, with costs starting at just .75¢.

Other stores had similar prices. Aldi sells green beans for .77¢; Tops sells them for .89¢; PriceRite sells them for .78¢; and Walmart sells them for .78¢.

    Ground beef

We also wanted to compare fresh meat. We looked at which stores sell the cheapest available 80/20 ground beef.

Once again, Wegmans takes the cake. By buying in bulk, you can buy beef for as low as $4.99/lb.

But other stores couldn’t match the price. Aldi sells beef for $5.99/lb.; Tops sells it for $6.49/lb.; PriceRite sells it for $5.99/lb.; and Walmart sells it for $6.64/lb.

    Consumers strained

Shoppers say the prices have put a strain on their wallets.

“I remember when I could go to the store with $100, fill up my cart, be able to feed my kids, and take care of my family for the next two weeks and then go ahead and do it again,” said single mother Priscilla Fitzgerald, who was shopping at Walmart. “Now, $100 will get you one bag and that’s about it.”

Fitzgerald says she’s had to look to other ways to save money on groceries.

“I have to be extremely stringent. Like, I have to have a budget. I have to stick to it. I have to plan out my meals. How many days do I have to cook? How many days can we have leftovers?” she said. “I try to go to the Public Market for any produce – apples, oranges, you know, all of those things. And I stock up there because your money can go further.”

    Gas price comparison

Groceries aren’t the only thing that have gone up since the War began. According to GasBuddy, in March, a gallon cost just $3.55 in Rochester. Today? It’s $4.24 a gallon – nearly a 20% increase.
