A preliminary hearing was held last Thursday for the capital murder charges in the deaths of University student Jazmine Alexis Bates, 22, and Jose “Felix” Alvarez-Duenas, 31.
De’Kendrick Crawford, 24, was charged with the murder of Bates and Alvarez-Duenas earlier this month. Alvarez-Duenas was housesitting and dogsitting for the owner of a home in Brookwood when both he and Bates were shot and killed. The dog present at the home was also shot and killed.
Tuscaloosa County District Judge Joanne Jannik ruled Thursday there was enough evidence to send the case to a grand jury for indictment after hearing Crawford’s testimony. Jannik also ordered that Crawford was to remain in jail without bond.
Bates and Alvarez-Duenas were both employees of Buffalo Phil’s, and Bates had previously worked at Avenue Pub. Bates was a senior at the University studying business administration and management. Alvarez-Duenas was a single father of three.
Both victims and Crawford were previous coworkers.
In an Instagram post following the murders, Buffalo Phil’s issued a statement remembering Bates and Alvarez-Duenas and their “kindness, dedication, and joy.”
“Felix and Jazmine, thank you for the laughter, the hard work, the kindness, and the memories you gave us. You will always be a part of our family,” the post read.
Capt. Jack Kennedy of the Violent Crimes Unit said in a press conference following the murders that Crawford had chosen not to speak to police and did not cooperate or surrender to police when found. Kennedy also said there was no known motive for the killings.
Prior to the alleged murders, prosecutors said Crawford was actively evading law enforcement and had an outstanding felony warrant for shooting into an occupied building adjacent to Coleman Coliseum.
