Australia demolished the previous Commonwealth Games record of 3:31.04 in the men’s medley relay tonight, dominating the second half of the race to come within a whisker of the Australian record in 3:28.71.
Henry Allan led off this evening in 53.58, just off his PB of 53.45, before handing over to 100 breaststroke champion Sam Williamson. He swam his fastest-ever split with a 58.40, four tenths faster than the 58.81 he split on the mixed medley last night and three quarters of a second faster than the 59.17 he clocked to win individual gold.
Matt Temple followed up his 50.05 split from the mixed medley last night with a 50.18 leg here, getting the better of Canada’s Josh Liendo by 0.01 seconds for the fastest split in the field, after Liendo out-touched him by the same margin to win the individual 100 fly title.
Flynn Southam, having taken over anchor leg duties from veteran Kyle Chalmers on merit, split 46.55 for his first sub-47 split and the #11 split in history. He has had three flat start swims between 47.09 and 47.29 at this meet, won the individual 100 free, set the Commonwealth Games record on the leadoff of the men’s 4×100 free relay, and here won his fifth gold medal of the meet.
The quartet were faster on almost every leg compared to the previous record, with Mitch Larkin‘s leadoff the only leg in which the 2018 vintage held an advantage.

They were a full second faster on the back half today compared to the 2009 standard, and with Henry Allan still a junior this team certainly has the potential to set a new Australian record at the World Championships next year.
Having taken the lead of the race tonight during the fly leg, Southam made it a comfortable victory as he extended the lead over England to two seconds. After the backstroke leg, on which Pieter Coetze lowered the Games record once again with a 51.71, the second-fastest swim in history, Australia had the fastest swimmer in the field on every stroke.
Adam Ramsay-Peaty was 58.74 on breaststroke, the nearest challenger to Williamson, who now has four gold medals, with Liendo 0.01 seconds slower than Matt Temple on fly. Southam had the fastest freestyle leg in the field by over a second, with England’s Jacob Mills the only other man to split under 48 seconds in 47.70.
