MISSION BEACH – Event promoter Liv Johnson is known for organizing fun beachfront festivals like Freedom Fest, Nakey Island, and SantaCon, via her company Almost Nakey.
But her upcoming endeavor, Renew, is focused not on hedonism, but health.
Renew, which takes place on Aug. 2 in Mission Beach, is a daylong wellness retreat of sorts, where attendees can focus on good, clean living. Along with Almost Nakey, it’s put together by another local event organizer, Same Same But Different.
“This is the first ever of this kind happening, this is a brand-new event series for us,” Johnson told Times of San Diego. “Renew is a really special event, a full day of wellness.”
Among the components of Renew are yoga classes, workout classes, cold plunges, saunas, Pilates, chiropractic care, and even a group ocean plunge.
The event also includes a “fireside chat” with Dr. Georgine Nanos, a board-certified longevity expert who’s the founder and chief executive officer of Kind Health Group, an Encinitas-based clinical practice.
During her talk, she’s expected to explore such topics as longevity, mental wellness, preventive healthcare, and practical ways to build healthier, more balanced habits that people can apply in their daily lives.
Johnson said the genesis for the event was put together with Same Same But Different founder Brad Sweet.
“With Brad and I, the thought was we just wanted a (health-focused) event for ourselves that we wanted to go to. So that’s how we created this,” she said. “We came up with this idea in March or April and (then) we announced it.
“The idea came together pretty quickly,” she added. “There was so much support for the idea. You know, we’re seeing this amazing (wellness) trend and people are just, like, thrilled about this concept.”
Johnson, who is a surfer and has practiced transcendental meditation since age 12, said that about 2,000 attendees are expected at the inaugural event, which takes place at Fit Social Club at Belmont Park.
It also happens to coincide with the release of the latest annual report from the American College of Sports Medicine and the Elevance Health Foundation, which ranks San Diego fifth among major U.S. cities when it comes to personal health.
According to the report, which was issued July 14, 82% of San Diego respondents said that they had exercised in the past month, and only 7% reported being smokers.
The city did not make the top 10 of the overall fittest cities in the country, however; it came in 11th, due in part to poor air quality, which the report said is caused by traffic and seasonal wildfires.
But events like Renew could possibly help San Diego become a fitter, healthier, and therefore, even happier place. The event isn’t just all about physical and mental exertion. Just like how people sometimes celebrate after accomplishing a tough feat like running a marathon or enduring a brutal workout, Renew will have its own post-fitness celebration.
Following the wellness events, there will be a concert, headlined by the instrumental electronic music duo Big Gigantic. Other performers, including EDM acts DJ Susan, ERO 808, and CLRBLND will also be on hand to help attendees unwind after sundown.
“This is not just a concert and not just a wellness event,” Johnson said. “It is a Sunday built for San Diego.”
