It is the 2nd day of action from the William Woollett Jr, Aquatics Center in Irvine for the 2026 U.S. National Championships.
The 2nd day of prelims will feature an eight-event slate, consisting of both the women’s and men’s 200 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 backstroke, and 50 butterfly.
The women’s 200 free will be headlined by Anna Moesch, who lowered her 100 free American Record Last night in 51.88 en route to a national championship title, she comes into this event as the top seed in 1:55.81. Others looking to cool down the hot hand of Moesch, those being the likes of Rylee Erisman, Liberty Clark, and Madi Mintenko.
Gabriel Jett leads the heats this morning in the men’s 200 free with his 1:44.70, the only sub 1:45 performer coming into this meet. He will battle for a spot in the ‘A’ final against Henry McFadden, Brooks Curry, Luka Mijatovic, and Kieran Smith.
Swim Atlanta’s Katie Christopherson sits as the pre-meet top seed in the women’s 200 breast in 2:26.65, less than a quarter of a second faster than 17-year-old Kaidy Stout in 2:26.84. Just behind those two is Adalene Robillard from Alto Swim Club in 2:27.11, making for a potentially tight prelims with the final still wide open.
AJ Pouch (2:08.34) and Josh Matheny (2:08.87) headline the men’s 200 breast as the lone two swimmers under 2:09. Very much in the mix is North Carolina’s Ben Delmar in 2:09.50, and Gabe Nunziata of Tennessee in 2:09.70, the only other entrants under 2:10.
Isabelle Stadden will look to continue her monster season as the clear top seed in the 200 back, coming into this meet as the fastest entered time by over a second and a half in 2:04.37, just about a second off of the American Record of 2:03.35.
US Olympian Keaton Jones enters the 200 back prelims with the top entered time of 1:54.85, as David King, Michael Hochwalt and Gabriel Jett will look to play spoilers and secure a finals spot for themselves.
Tennessee’s Mizuki Hirai leads the way in the women’s 50 fly in 25.63, followed closely by Michigan’s Brady Kendall and Louisville’s Caroline Larsen in 25.89 and 26.06, respectively.
The final event of the prelims will see a loaded men’s 50 fly, including Ilya Kharun, Caeleb Dressel, Santo Condorelli, and Michael Andrew, fighting to claim one of the eight spots up for grabs in these prelims.
Note: Junior swimmers in the top eight will advance to the junior final, rather than the open final, if they are vying for Junior Pan Pac selection. If they don’t want to vie for Junior Pan Pacs, swimmers are able to drop out of the junior final, and would subsequently slot into their spot in the open or ‘B’ final.
Foreign swimmers are eligible to qualify for the ‘A’ final, but not the 18 & under junior final.
