Given Allen’s history as a straight shooter, that isn’t surprising. Heck, it is encouraging to hear that coming from the Bears beat. We will have more from DA’s press conference later today. But I just knew I had to do something on this now.
Tyrique Stevenson is on the hot seat as training camp begins
My initial reaction to the Dennis Allen quote on Tyrique Stevenson was an audible oof. Stevenson is entering Year 4 as a pro, and the conversation around his game still centers around consistency. That irks me. But maybe it shouldn’t. After all, this isn’t the first time we’ve heard this. For instance, the lack of consistency in Stevenson’s game was a central point in colleague Patrick K. Flowers’ season-in-review post on the cornerback. No wonder Stevenson was sweating the small stuff this spring.

Back in May, I wrote about Stevenson being on the hot seat after the team drafted University of Texas cornerback Malik Muhammad. If DC Dennis Allen’s words are to be taken at face value, then this summer is shaping up to have a showdown between Muhammad and Stevenson to start opposite Jaylon Johnson. Maybe Terell Smith, who is coming off an ACL injury suffered during the 2025 preseason, can fit into the mix somewhere, too.
In the end, I find it unsettling that two of the Bears’ top three cornerbacks are in a position where they need to earn their coaches’ trust going into training camp. The Kyler Gordon injury saga is its own problem. But with Gordon on the mend and Stevenson needing to prove himself, there are plenty of opportunities for other cornerbacks to work their way into a bigger role. I look forward to seeing how this plays out.
