He clocked a time of 1:47.83, touching 4th in the penultimate heat, to miss the final by 0.37 seconds.
Scott has won gold in the 200 IM and bronze in the mixed 4×100 medley relay so far at these Games, as well as placing 4th in the 200 fly. He was slightly off his season best times in both events, but was more than two seconds slower than the 1:45.44 he clocked at the Aquatics GB Championships in April in his swim this morning.
Scott won gold in Birmingham four years ago, posting a time of 1:45.02 to take the win over England’s Tom Dean. He has been one of the most successful British swimmers in the 200 free over the past decade, ever since placing 4th at the Rio Olympics.
He won bronze at the 2019 World Championships in a time of 1:45.63, and upgraded to silver at the Olympics two years later in a time of 1:44.26, missing gold by just 0.04 seconds. He missed the 2022 World Championships due to illness and did not qualify for the 2023 World Championships in the event, finishing behind Matt Richards and Tom Dean at the British Championships that year.
He finished 4th in the Olympic final in 2024, missing a medal by just 0.15 seconds, but had the opportunity to add his third Commonwealth title in the event today. It didn’t seem as though it was a case of taking it too easy and misjudging the competition, as he told TNT after the final heat that “I had nothing left. I gave it everything down that final length.”
Having turned first at halfway, Scott fell down the field on the next two 50s as he split 27.84 and 28.01. He had not looked quite in his usual form in the men’s 4×200 free relay on day 3, splitting 1:45.58 for one of his slowest finals relay splits over the last decade. He had a stronger back half then than today, splitting 27.60/26.62 on the second half of the race.
Events 200m or longer go straight to finals at the Commonwealth Games, in contrast to the standard heats – semi-finals – final format used at the other major championships. With a high-quality field in the men’s 200 free, there was always a high likelihood of a big name missing the final.
Scott will have just the men’s 4×100 medley relay to swim tonight, with Scotland going in as the 5th-fastest seed after clocking a time of 3:40.30 this morning. They will likely be significantly faster, with 100 back finalist Matt Ward and 100 fly finalist Dean Fearn coming into the finals quartet alongside Scott, but are still an outside shot at a medal.
Even without Scott, the men’s 200 free final tonight looks stacked. James Guy (1:45.69) and Sam Short (1:45.90) will be in the middle lanes, with Harrison Turner (1:46.08), Matt Richards (1:46.50), Jack McMillan (1:46.72), and Lewis Clareburt (1:46.92) all breaking 1:47 this morning.
Kai Turner (1:47.23), who split 1:44.10 on the men’s 4×200 free relay for Australia, will be in lane 1, with England’s 2020(1) Olympic champion Tom Dean the final man in with a time of 1:47.46, after fading down the final 50 this morning.
