Men’s 100 Back – Semi-Finals

World Record: 51.60 – Thomas Ceccon (ITA), 2022 Commonwealth Record: 51.85 – Pieter Coetze (RSA), 2025 Games Record: 53.12 – Chris Walker-Hebborn (ENG), 2014 2022 Champion: Pieter Coetze (RSA) – 53.78

Top 8:

Pieter Coetze (South Africa) – 52.20 ***NEW GAMES RECORD*** Oliver Morgan (England) – 53.09 Ruard van Renen (South Africa) – 53.41 Jack Skerry (England) – 53.58 Matthew Ward (Scotland) – 53.59 Cameron Brooker (England) – 53.73 Henry Allan (Australia) – 53.93 Isaac Cooper (Australia) – 54.58

Pieter Coetze soared to another Commonwealth Games record at this meet, setting his sixth of the week with a 52.20 in the 100 back semi-finals, then lowering it by another two tenths of a second to 51.98 on the leadoff of the mixed 4×100 medley relay.

Swimming out of lane 5 in the second semi-final, Coetze looked imperious as he got out to an early lead in 25.09, half a second ahead of another world-class swimmer in England’s Ollie Morgan, then closed in 27.11 to touch in 52.20.

Just 40 minutes later he was back to lead off the mixed medley relay for South Africa, one of two male leadoffs in the field along with Scotland’s Matt Ward. He was out slightly slower in 25.18, but was three-tenths faster on the second 50 to break 52 seconds for the third time in his career in 51.98.

That ties for the 17th-fastest swim in history, and he is now only one sub-52 swim behind Ryan Murphy and Thomas Ceccon, who are tied for the most in history.

He lowered his newly-minted Games record in the 100 back with that leadoff, and more was to come as South Africa held strong to win silver behind Australia, setting a new African record. That gives Coetze his third medal of the meet already, with a fourth almost certain to come in the men’s 100 back final tomorrow. He also now owns the 21 fastest swims in African history.

Coetze was just 0.13 seconds off his African record tonight, going out a quarter of a second slower but closing a tenth of a second faster. He almost exactly matched the splits from his winning time at the 2025 World University Games.

Coetze leapfrogs Xu Jiayu in the season rankings and now leads by four tenths of a second. Ollie Morgan, who ranks 3rd in those rankings, is the second seed into tomorrow’s 100 back final after clocking 53.09 in the semi-finals tonight.
