Poles essentially sets a soft deadline by pointing out there is “a window to get a deal done” and expressing that he would like to get something done before games get underway. That gives us 47 days to make something shake on the Darnell Wright extension watch. Hearing the old “it takes two to tango” schtick from the GM irks me. Is Poles insinuating that Wright’s representation isn’t negotiating? Or is he hinting that the Bears aren’t talking to Wright about an extension? Either way you slice it, it makes me feel uneasy. The Bears’ general manager made it clear that he does not want the extension situation to “become a distraction.” That statement, for all its innocence, puts some pressure on all parties to get a deal done. In case you’re only now circling back into football mode, let’s play catch-up. Bears GM Ryan Poles began the offseason by declaring that a Darnell Wright extension was “definitely a priority” for the front office. And why wouldn’t it be? Wright has gotten better every year and is coming off a season in which he earned second-team All-Pro honors. Since then, Wright has been showered with praise by his coach, national analysts, and others around the league.
Throughout the offseason, there has been optimism that a deal could “get done quickly” for Wright and the Bears. And maybe it still will. But that it doesn’t sound like anything is close to getting done irks me. It’s not as if discussions regarding a Wright extension are coming out of nowhere. This is something that has clearly been on the front office’s radar for months. So while the general tenor from the Bears’ GM is more positive than negative, it is frustrating to think about the lack of progress here.
I suppose the good news here is that we have a new data point to discuss regarding a Darnell Wright extension. However, it might cost the Bears a few more dollars in the grand scheme of things.

O’Neill’s extension is reportedly worth up to $96 million over the next four years. Earlier in the offseason, we figured an extension for Wright would land in the $25 million range. That O’Neill lands a deal in that ballpark should give both the Bears and Wright’s representation a realistic price point to work with as they attempt to knock out a deal.
We’ve seen the Bears jump the market on extending home-grown players in the past. A springtime extension for Jaylon Johnson in 2024 came right before the big cornerback contract boom. And a Cole Kmet extension in the summer of 2023 dropped before other contracts that would come down the pipeline and top his deal. Waiting too long to agree to an extension could lead others to set the market and raise the bar for the cost of doing business on a Wright deal. Considering the franchise’s financial restraints, you’d think they’d want to get a deal done sooner rather than later.
In the end, I feel as if Bears GM Ryan Poles is better now at getting these extensions knocked out than he was when he first arrived on the scene. That Roquan Smith contract situation in 2022 was a disaster for everyone involved. Roquan, the front office, fans, everyone. But at least Smith found football happiness in his new home. Hopefully, the Bears can avoid any unsavory off-the-field drama surrounding the Darnell Wright extension situation.
